Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Carmelites gather for their annual celebration of
Our Lady of Mount Carmel in New York City. The crowd is diverse, but Haitian-American
parishioners outnumber the Italians who as immigrants, established the parish
on 115th Street in the 19th century.
After mass, attendees join the procession that begins outside church doors.
Catholic priests and congregants walk through their East Harlem neighborhood
receiving onlookers' best wishes. French and Creole songs, strains of "Ave
Maria" and band music interrupt the otherwise quiet afternoon.
The statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is linked to the Haitian spirit of
feminine love. In Carmelite tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary gave the scapular
to St. Simon Stock on July 16 in 1251. She is one of three images of the Virgin
Mary recognized by pontifical authority.
