Diane Farrell: Election 2006
In Connecticut, Diane Farrell, a two term first selectwoman in Westport is
neck and neck with moderate Republican Christopher Shays. In 2004, she also
ran, coming close to winning the seat with 48 percent of the vote. A poll
this week has Farrell 4 points up,with one third of the respondents opposing
the war.
Shays is often pictured as questioning the war and, in general, as a somewhat
hesitant supporter of Bush policies in Iraq. But Farrell says her opponent
is all talk and no action.
Farrell is one of a number of Democratic women running strongly against Republican
incumbents who can't be easily labeled as liberal or conservative. Rather
they are independent minded with a penchant for such things as stem cell research
and pro choice, fiscal prudence. They are against the war.
In this video, firefighter Eric Fine presents the Westport public safety radio
system, which Farrell helped establish without federal funds. Joining her
is Bob Kerrey, former presidential candidate, senator, and current president
of The New School. He endorses Farrell and Senator Joe Lieberman.
